Our recommended 7-day itinerary maximizes acclimatization and summit success
Rainforest Zone • 5-7 hours hiking
A gentle introduction through the lush rainforest. The trail is well-defined but can be muddy. You'll hear monkeys and see stunning vegetation.
Rainforest to Moorland • 4-6 hours hiking
Today you'll feel the altitude as you climb above 3,500m. The landscape transforms dramatically from forest to open moorland with unique vegetation.
Acclimatization Day • 5-7 hours hiking
Climbing to 4,630m then descending to sleep at 3,960m is perfect for acclimatization. Your body produces more red blood cells to cope with altitude.
Barranco Wall • 4-5 hours hiking
Take it slow, use three points of contact, and follow your guide. The wall looks intimidating but is manageable for most climbers with basic fitness.
Alpine Desert • 3-4 hours hiking
Your guide will conduct a comprehensive summit briefing. Learn what to wear, what to pack, and what to expect during the midnight start.
The Big Day! • 11-15 hours hiking
Watching sunrise from Stella Point is magical. The final hour to Uhuru Peak offers breathtaking glacier views. You're standing on the Roof of Africa!
After summit photos, descend to Barafu Camp (2-3 hours), have lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight. Total descent: 2,795m!

Common questions about climbing Kilimanjaro via Machame Route
Yes! Machame is excellent for first-time climbers with reasonable fitness. The 7-day itinerary provides excellent acclimatization. We recommend 3-6 months of regular hiking training.
The Barranco Wall (Day 4) requires scrambling but no technical climbing skills. Summit day (Day 6) is physically demanding due to altitude and long duration (11-15 hours).
June-October (dry season) and December-February (shorter dry season) are ideal. March-May is rainy season with slippery trails. November can be variable.
With our 7-day itinerary, success rate is 85%. 6-day itineraries have lower success (65-70%). We strongly recommend 7 days for better acclimatization.
Temperatures can drop to -10°C to -20°C with wind chill. Proper gear is essential. We provide gear lists and can rent equipment if needed.
