Luggage & Bags: The Soft-Sided Rule
Most important rule: Use soft-sided duffel bags, not hard-shell suitcases. Safari vehicles (especially small planes) have limited space. Hard cases don't fit. Here's what to bring:
- Main bag: Soft-sided duffel bag (60-80 liters). Waterproof or with rain cover.
- Daypack: 20-30 liter backpack for daily safari essentials (camera, binoculars, water, snacks, jacket).
- Weight limit: 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) for main bag + 5 kg (11 lbs) for carry-on on small flights.
- Packing cubes: Highly recommended for organization.
- Laundry bag: Sealable for dirty clothes.
Clothing Essentials: Colors, Layers & Fabrics
Color rule: Stick to khaki, olive, tan, beige, brown, and light green. Avoid bright colors (especially white, red, blue) โ they attract tsetse flies and scare wildlife. No camouflage (illegal for civilians in Tanzania).
DO Pack
- โ 3-4 lightweight, long-sleeved shirts (neutral colors)
- โ 2-3 T-shirts (moisture-wicking)
- โ 2 pairs safari pants (convertible zip-offs are great)
- โ 1 pair shorts (for lodges only, not game drives)
- โ Fleece jacket or lightweight down vest (cold mornings)
- โ Rain jacket (especially green season)
- โ Wide-brimmed sun hat with chin strap
- โ Buff or bandana (dust protection)
- โ Swimsuit (lodges with pools)
- โ 4-5 pairs moisture-wicking socks
- โ 4-5 pairs underwear (quick-dry)
DON'T Pack
- โ Bright white, red, or blue clothing
- โ Camouflage or military-style clothing
- โ Hard-shell suitcases
- โ Jeans (heavy, slow to dry)
- โ Black clothing (attracts tsetse flies)
- โ Expensive jewelry or watches
- โ Hair dryer (most camps don't have outlets)
- โ Drone (illegal in national parks)
Footwear: Comfort is King
- Sturdy closed-toe walking shoes/hiking boots: Essential for walking safaris, lodge walks, and rough terrain. Break them in before your trip.
- Sandals or flip-flops: For lodges, swimming pools, and showers.
- Lightweight sneakers: Optional for relaxed days.
- Gaiters: Helpful for walking safaris (keeps dust and seeds out).
Camera & Electronics: Capturing the Magic
- Camera body: DSLR or mirrorless with fast autofocus.
- Lenses: 100-400mm or 200-600mm recommended. 70-200mm is versatile. Wide-angle (16-35mm) for landscapes and camp shots.
- Extra batteries & charger: Cold mornings drain batteries faster. Safari vehicles don't always have charging ports.
- Memory cards: Bring at least 128GB (or 256GB if shooting video).
- Beanbag or window mount: Essential for stabilizing your lens on vehicle window.
- Binoculars: 8x42 or 10x42. Don't skimp โ good optics make a huge difference.
- Power bank: 10,000-20,000 mAh for charging devices during long game drives.
- Universal travel adapter: Tanzania uses Type D and G (UK-style 3-pin). 230V, 50Hz.
- Headlamp or small flashlight: Essential for evening walks in camp.
Health & Medication: Stay Safe
- Malaria prophylaxis: Consult your doctor. Options: Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine.
- Insect repellent: DEET 30-50% or Picaridin. Apply morning and evening.
- Permethrin-treated clothing: Spray shirts, pants, and socks before travel.
- Basic first aid kit: Bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers (ibuprofen, paracetamol), anti-diarrheal (Imodium), oral rehydration salts.
- Prescription medications: Bring enough for your trip + extra in case of delays. Keep in carry-on.
- Motion sickness medication: Meclizine, Dramamine (bumpy roads!).
- Hand sanitizer & wet wipes: Many camps have limited running water.
- COVID-19 essentials: Masks, rapid tests (optional but good to have).

Pro Packing Tips from Safari Guides
- โ Roll your clothes instead of folding โ saves space and reduces wrinkles.
- โ Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on โ luggage sometimes arrives late on small flights.
- โ Wear neutral colors from head to toe โ even your hat and jacket should be khaki/green.
- โ Leave expensive watches and jewelry at home โ they attract unwanted attention and can be lost.
- โ Test your camera gear before you go โ ensure batteries hold charge, lenses are clean.
- โ Bring a spare pair of glasses/contacts โ dust and dryness can ruin contacts quickly.
- โ Pack a small roll of duct tape โ fixes everything from torn bags to broken sandals.
Frequently Asked Questions About Safari Packing
Can I wear jeans on safari? Not recommended โ they're heavy, slow to dry, and uncomfortable in heat. Choose lightweight safari pants or hiking trousers.
Do I need a safari hat? Yes โ wide-brimmed hats with chin straps are essential. Baseball caps don't protect your neck and ears.
What about laundry on safari? Many lodges offer laundry service ($5-15 per bag). Quick-dry clothing is best if you plan to hand-wash.
Can I bring a drone? No โ drones are strictly prohibited in all Tanzanian national parks and conservation areas. They disturb wildlife.
What's the dress code for dinner at lodges? Casual but neat. Many lodges have no specific dress code โ clean safari clothes are fine.
Should I pack a hair dryer? Most tented camps don't have outlets powerful enough for hair dryers (they run on 12V solar). Leave it at home.
What's the best way to handle money? Bring USD for park fees, tips, and large purchases. Use Tanzanian Shillings for small items, markets, and taxis.
Do I need a voltage converter? Tanzania uses 230V/50Hz. Most modern electronics are dual voltage (110-240V). Check your devices. You'll need a plug adapter (Type D or G).
