Kilimanjaro Packing List 2025-2026: Complete Gear Guide for a Successful Summit
Packing List Index
Packing Philosophy: Less is More
Packing for Kilimanjaro is a balancing act. You need enough gear to stay warm and safe, but porters carry your main duffel bag (max 15-20kg / 33-44 lbs). Your daypack (5-8kg) carries essentials for the day's hike. The key is layering โ you'll experience everything from tropical heat at the gate to freezing temperatures at the summit.
"There's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. On Kilimanjaro, proper layering is the difference between enjoyment and misery." โ Kilimanjaro Gear Specialist
The Layering System: 3-4 Layers
Kilimanjaro's temperatures vary dramatically โ from 25-30ยฐC (77-86ยฐF) at the gate to -10 to -20ยฐC (14 to -4ยฐF) at the summit. The solution is a layering system that allows you to add or remove layers as conditions change.
Base Layer (Wicking Layer)
The base layer sits directly against your skin. Its job is to wick moisture away from your body โ never cotton!
- 2-3 long-sleeve tops: Merino wool or synthetic (no cotton)
- 2-3 pairs long underwear bottoms: Merino wool or synthetic
- 3-4 pairs underwear: Quick-drying (synthetic or merino)
- 2 sports bras (women): Breathable, supportive
Mid Layer (Insulation Layer)
The mid layer traps heat and provides insulation.
- 1-2 fleece jackets: Mid-weight (200-300 weight)
- 1 lightweight down or synthetic vest/jacket: For cooler days on the trail
- 1 pair fleece pants (optional): For cold evenings in camp
Outer Layer (Shell Layer)
The outer layer protects against wind, rain, and snow. This is CRITICAL for summit night.
- Heavy down jacket: For summit night and cold camps (800-fill power or equivalent synthetic) Rentable
- Waterproof shell jacket: Gore-Tex or equivalent โ must be waterproof, not just water-resistant
- Waterproof shell pants: Full-zip side zippers (easier to put on over boots)
- Insulated pants (optional): For summit night
Footwear & Socks
Your boots are the most important piece of gear โ don't skimp here!
- Waterproof hiking boots: Stiff sole, ankle support, broken in before climb Rentable
- Camp shoes/sandals: Crocs, Tevas, or lightweight sneakers for evenings
- 4-6 pairs wool hiking socks: Merino wool (Darn Tough, Smartwool) โ NO COTTON
- 2-3 liner socks (optional): Silk or synthetic, worn under wool socks
- Gaiters: Keep debris and snow out of boots
Accessories: Head, Hands & Face
